Everything You Need to Know (FAQ Guide)
If you’re dreaming of a relaxed adventure that combines beautiful scenery, historic towns and the freedom of travelling at your own pace, a multi-day canoe trip on the River Severn could be exactly what you’re looking for.
At River Severn Canoes, we offer self-guided canoe journeys on the UK’s longest river, with all the logistics, equipment, transport and local knowledge taken care of, so you can simply enjoy being on the water.
With over 40 years of canoeing experience, two Tripadvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards, and daily trips throughout the season, you’re in very safe hands.
Below, we’ve answered the most common questions we get about our multi-day canoe trips.
What is a self-guided canoe trip?
A self-guided canoe trip means you paddle independently, at your own pace, following a clearly planned route, but with full support behind the scenes.
We provide:
Detailed route maps and river guidance
Advice on overnight stops, campsites, and B&Bs
Daily updates on river and weather conditions
All equipment, transport, and secure parking
24/7 phone support throughout your trip
You get the freedom of your own adventure, without the stress of organising the details.

Do I need canoeing experience?
You don’t need to be an expert, but some prior paddling experience is required.
We ask that all participants:
Have paddled for at least two days previously
Feel confident steering a canoe
Can swim at least 50 metres
Are comfortable around water
At the start of your trip, we provide a full safety briefing, covering paddling technique, river hazards, and what to expect along your route.
Are these trips suitable for beginners?
Yes — with the right level of confidence.
The River Severn is generally calm, wide, and forgiving, making it ideal for paddlers who are new to multi-day canoeing. Distances are manageable, routes are well planned, and there are plenty of places to stop, rest, or explore along the way.
We’re also on the river every day during the season, so our routes are constantly reviewed and updated.
How long are the trips?
We offer 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-day canoe trips, so you can choose the adventure that suits your time and experience.
