From Crew Green to Bewdley
If you want to experience the River Severn properly — not just a short paddle, but a journey that unfolds day by day — a five-day canoe trip from Crew Green or Montford Bridge to Bewdley is one of the most rewarding ways to do it.
This route follows a long, varied stretch of the UK’s longest river, combining history, changing landscapes, quiet countryside and some of the most iconic river scenery in England.
Why Choose a Five-Day Canoe Trip on the River Severn?
A five-day trip allows the river to reveal itself gradually. Upper sections feel rural and intimate, while downstream the Severn widens, slows, and becomes more powerful. You paddle through market towns, pass ancient crossing points, drift beneath the Iron Bridge, and finish in the relaxed riverside town of Bewdley.
It’s long enough to feel like a real expedition, but gentle enough to suit paddlers with basic experience who are comfortable paddling several days in a row.
Day-by-Day: What the Journey Is Like
Day 1 – Crew Green / Montford Bridge → Shrewsbury
The trip begins on the upper River Severn, where wide views and quiet banks set the tone. This stretch is steeped in history, with ancient crossing points and riverside landmarks dating back centuries.
As you paddle downstream, the river gradually opens out before arriving at Shrewsbury, the county town of Shropshire. Overnight options include campsites or local B&Bs.
Day 2 – Shrewsbury → Atcham (11 miles)
Starting in the heart of Shrewsbury, you paddle past historic riverside buildings before the town fades behind you. A short portage around a weir is required here (made easy with a trolley).
Beyond this point, the river becomes quieter and more rural, with gentle bends and open countryside leading to Atcham, a peaceful riverside village and popular overnight stop.
Day 3 – Atcham → Buildwas / Ironbridge (15 miles)
This section marks a shift in character. The river widens, the meanders lengthen, and the Severn begins to feel more mature.
You pass through broad valleys and open landscapes before reaching either the simple wild camping area at Buildwas or the historic town of Ironbridge.
Day 4 – Buildwas / Ironbridge → Hampton Loade (14 miles)
One of the highlights of the entire journey. Paddling through the Ironbridge Gorge, you pass beneath the famous Iron Bridge itself — an unforgettable moment on the water.
Shortly after Ironbridge, there is a Grade 2 rapid at Jackfield, which we recommend is portaged.
Beyond this, the river becomes quieter again, flowing through wooded and secluded countryside to Hampton Loade.
Day 5 – Hampton Loade → Bewdley (10 miles)
The final day is relaxed and scenic. Woodland, riverside pubs, and the village of Arley line the banks as the river winds toward Bewdley.
You finish just before the town bridge, marking the end of a true multi-day river journey.
Camping, B&Bs, and Life on the River
One of the pleasures of a multi-day canoe trip on the River Severn is flexibility. Each overnight stop offers camping and B&B options, allowing paddlers to choose between sleeping under canvas or enjoying a proper bed.
Evenings are unhurried: setting up camp, cooking by the river, or walking into a village pub. Mornings begin quietly, packing the canoe and easing back onto the water.

A Journey Worth Taking
A five-day canoe trip on the River Severn isn’t about rushing from A to B. It’s about watching the river change, noticing the details, and settling into the rhythm of life on the water.
By the time you reach Bewdley, you’ll have paddled through centuries of history, a wide range of landscapes, and one of the most beautiful river corridors in the UK.
